Tilly heads back to Witham

STEVE Tilson will be lining up alongside Danny Greaves once again at Witham Town tomorrow.

But for once the close friends will be on opposite sides.

Greaves and Tilson teamed up together at the start of Tilson’s career at Witham during the late 1980s.

And they still play for the same veterans side, Tag United, every weekend.

However, this weekend they will be going head to head.

And it is a battle Greaves, the Witham manager, is looking forward to.

“It’s great that Steve and Southend United are coming down to play us,” said Greaves.

“We still see each other quite often, I live near his parents in Wickford and it will be strange being in opposite dug-outs but it will be a good afternoon for everyone.

“Hopefully there will be a good crowd and being a former Southend player myself it would be nice to get a bit of a cheer.”

Those Shrimpers supporters should be grateful for Greaves too as it was him who instigated Tilson’s first involvement with Southend.

Greaves recommended the midfielder to then Blues boss David Webb and it did not take long to complete the deal.

“I had known of Tilly but when I saw him play I told Dave Webb to give him a chance and that’s exactly what happened,” said Greaves.

“He went on to do very well for Southend but when we were at Witham together I did outscore him and do still like to remind him of that every now and then.”
