ALAN McCormack insists Southend United are not far short of turning their succession of draws into a welcome run of wins.

The Shrimpers have started the League One season with four straight stalemates and were held to a 0-0 draw by Millwall at Roots Hall on Friday night.

But that does not concern McCormack who has been encouraged by the standard of his side’s performances.

“It is a bit frustrating but there is no need to be too worried because we have been playing well,” said the Irishman.

“If we look at changing one or two things then we could end up losing so we just need to keep on doing what we are the moment.

“Millwall were in the top six last season and could well be there again this year but I felt we played them off the park for most of the match. We just couldn’t get the break we needed in front of goal.”

McCormack came closest to breaking the deadlock for the Shrimpers with a low shot on the stroke of half-time which brushed the outside of the right post. But the 25-year-old was fully expecting the ball to hit the back of the net.

“It was so close and I thought it was in when I hit it to be honest,” said McCormack.

“I was getting ready to turn away to celebrate but it just went away from goal at the last minute and it was obviously disappointing to see it go wide.”

McCormack would have been a worthy match winner too after producing a fine display in the centre of the park.

The energetic midfielder produced a number of crunching challenges in a fiesty game and was pleased by his own display.

“I feel like I’m getting better with every game at the moment,” said McCormack.

“The team are doing well too. We want to end the run of draws we’re on by winning and we’re confident of doing that.”

Blues boss Steve Tilson is also sure his side will soon be celebrating a league victory. And he again looked at the positive side of the latest draw with the Lions “Millwall had one spell of pressure but other than that I felt we dominated the match,” said Tilson.

“It was a committed performance and again we need to look at the positives. We are five games unbeaten and that was our first clean sheet of the season.

“We just need to keep on doing what we are doing and that will soon turn into wins.”

Next up for the Shrimpers is a visit to Hull City tomorrow night in the second round of the Carling Cup and Tilson knows there is nothing to lose at the KC Stadium.

“It wasn’t a great draw for us but we will go there and give it a go,” said the Blues boss.

“We’ve had some great cup runs over the last few years and it would be brilliant to have another one.”
