Winning Canterbury tales for Southend


SOUTHEND Swimming club started the new season on top form with a winning team effort at the City of Canterbury open meet.

A total of 27 swimmers from the performance and rookie squads attended the one-day event.

Southend were awarded the top club award for collecting the most team points as they recorded 25 new Essex qualifying times and collected 38 top six places.

In the 16/over age group Christian Parker was first in the 100 metres breaststroke.

Charlie Pond Thompson was second in the 100 breaststroke and fourth 100 free.

Tim Evans was third in the 100 fly and 5th 100 free. Alfie Hunter improved his personal best times in both the 100 backstroke and fly to finish sixth.

Reece Parker and Jack Carter, both swimming in the 14/15 age group, had a battle for first place in the 100 free, Parker just getting the touch for first place in 58.79 with Carter second in 58.89.

Both boys went sub one minute for the first time. Carter added first in the 200 (IM) 225.94 and Parker was second in the 100 backstroke.

In the 12 years age group Joel Crosskey recorded a personal best time in the 100 breaststroke final to finish second.

Billy Maynard was third in the 100 backstroke, while Kieran Wilkinson collected fourth place in the 100 butterfly with a personal best time.

And Jack Overell improved his entry times on both the 100 free and breaststroke to collect sixth place medals in both events.

In the 16/over age group Georgia Knowles was second with a personal best time in the butterfly. Charley Gallagher was second 100 free and third 100 breaststroke.

In the 13 years age group, Katie Willis was second in 100 butterfly and third in 100 breaststroke. Amelia Knowles was first in 100 backstroke with a personal best 109.09, second in 200 IM and third in 100 free.

In the 12 yearrs age group Jessica Smoothy was fourth in 100 backstroke with a personal best 118.19. Morgan Lupton was second in 100 breaststroke with a personal best time. Sophie Waymont collected medals in the 100 butterfly second, 100 backstroke (fourth), and 100 free (third).

Ellie Carter was fifth in 100 free and sixth in 100 backstroke. Rhiannon Bayley, swimming in the 10 years age group, was first 50 backstroke and second 50 breaststroke.

Eighteen swimmers from the club’s performance squad travelled to Calella in Spain for a training camp. The club thanked all the parents, swimmers, club supporters and sponsors (Remco Graphics) who raised £6,000 to fund the trip and the coaches and support staff who took annual leave to make this trip possible.
