Southend can’t put the brakes on Ford

SOUTHEND'S men’s first team dropped two places to seventh in East Two South when they lost 4-2 at home to Ford.

The seasiders’ scorers were J Byford and J Lockwood and they now visit Witham on Saturday with a 2.30pm start.

Life is much brighter for the second team. They stayed top of East Five South-east after their 2-1 home success over Brentwood thirds.

Rob Style put Southend ahead from a short corner and Karl Druce flicked home a rebound for the second.

They are also at Witham, against the host club’s third string, on Saturday at 2pm.

The men’s third XI host Romford seconds at Sweyne Park School (2.15pm) and will look to improve on last week’s display at University of Essex seconds.

They were crushed 7-1 with only a goal from I Crompton offering any comfort.

They remain 11th out of 12 competing clubs in East Six South-east.

Bruce Taylor was the two goal star for Southend fourths in their 2-1 win over Upminster 5ths in East Nine South-east. But they remain last of the 10 clubs and will look to improve that position against Old de Ferrians seconds at Wiliam de Ferrers (12 noon) on Saturday.

Like their men counterparts, the ladies’ first XI are sliding down the table. They’re 10th out of 12 in East One South after a 2-0 defeat at Sevenoaks second and will hope for better things when they host Brentwood at Sweyne Park on Saturday (11am).

The second XI remain fifth after a 2-2 draw at home to Harlow. K Durban and H Richards were the scorers here and they now look to further their Essex Premier ambitions —they currently stand fifth — away to Wapping thirds on Saturday (11.30am).

The ladies’ third XI are down a place at rock bottom out of the 12 clubs in Essex One and lost 1-0 at home to Phoenix seconds in their latest outing. They look to improve their fortunes on Saturday at Chelmer Park when they take on Chelmsford fourths.

L Tonking was the seasiders’ scorer for the ladies’ fourths, who lost 3-1 at Colne.

Southend are still 11 out of 12 in Essex Two and now host Upminster third at Sweyne Park (12.45pm) on Saturday.

The ladies’ fifth XI, currently 10th out of 12 teams in Essex Three, were pleased with their goalless draw at Thurrock third.

They had four players, fresh from their school team, making their debuts and star player Carly Belcher was out with a hand injury.

They also suffered with some of their players being called up for the fourths.

But they produced a good solid team show with excellent defending from Christine Baker, Fiona Regan and Ellen Smith along with Holly Smith in goal.

Hannah Davies and Chloe “Roadrunner” Willis ran their socks off up front and were well supported by Bridget Newlove and Liane Isle who maintained great pace throughout.

Isobel Franklin and Eleanor Copland got in some great positions to receive balls on the flanks.

Sadly after this showing the fifths are without a game this weekend — and it’s a similar story for the mixed XI, who put up a good display, with several distinguished debuts, before losing 3-1 at Old Southendian with Mel Lamb scoring.

The mixed line-up are second out of the four clubs in Essex Mixed Two East.
