BLUES boss Steve Tilson felt his side had enough of the ball to get something from last night’s defeat at bottom of the table Tranmere Rovers.
A goal in each half saw the Shrimpers suffer a 2-0 reverse at Prenton Park.
But Tilson was not disappointed by the performance.
“We had enough of the game and the ball to not lose,” said Tilson, 43.
“Things just didn’t go our way in front of goal and we just needed that little bit of luck.
“It didn’t drop our way even though we got some decent balls into the box but things are hard for us right now because we’re having to keep on changing things all the time.”
With Johnny Herd now out injured for three weeks with another hamstring strain, Tilson has brought left-back Scott Malone to the club from Wolverhampton Wanderers for at least a month.
He made his debut at Tranmere last night and impressed Tilson with his display.
“Scott’s an 18-year-old lad who met the team for the first time at the pre-match meal,” said Tilson.
“It’s not ideal but I thought he did well and the effort and commitment was there from the team.
“We played some decent stuff and I wasn’t actually disappointed with the performance.
“We just need to try and get some consistency in our team selection like we had a few years ago but right now it’s all very bitty and, especially in defence, we’re changing things every week.”
Southend do not now have a game until next Tuesday when they host Norwich City at Roots Hall.
But the Shrimpers are now sweating on the fitness of Francis Laurent who limped off last night with a hamstring problem.
“It’s another one we’ve got out injured now,” said Tilson.
“He’s hurt his hamstring but we won’t know how bad it is until another two or three days.”
Southend stay 11th in the table despite the defeat.
