BASILDON professional Stuart Bingham admits “every match is a pint of blood” as he battles desperately to cling onto his top 32 ranking place.
The new towner made a great start to his Pukka Pies UK Championship challenge with a 9-2 success over Jimmy Michie, assisted by breaks of 95, 141 and 67 in the final qualifying round.
Now he is through to the main event which gets underway at the Telford International Centre on Saturday and plays at 3pm on the opening day with his best-of-17 frames first round match being completed from the same time on Sunday.
Although standing 21st in the official rankings, Bingham has currently slipped to 28th on the provisional ratings covering last season and the current campaign.
He starts his main UK bid in Shropshire against Joe Perry, officially ranked 12th but down to 17th provisionally.
On his success over Michie at Pontin’s Prestatyn Bingham admitted: “It was nice to play well and win easily.”
And on his forthcoming clash with Perry, Bingham admitted: “I owe Joe because he beat me in the quarters of the UK in 2005 and also beat me 13-9 at the Crucible (the World Championship) last year.
“If I’d won that match I would have been in the top 16.”
The UK Championship will receive extensive coverage on BBC Television.
