Steve Tilson: We should have killed the game off

BLUES boss Steve Tilson felt his side should have killed the game off with the chances they created against Wycombe Wanderers this afternoon.

Alan McCormack headed Southend United into the lead at Roots Hall but the Shrimpers were eventually forced to settle for a 1-1 draw.

And that frustrated Tilson.

"Once we have gone ahead, we should have killed the game off," said the 43-year-old.

"We had two fantastic chances to get the three points, with Francis Laurent missing from four yards and then Matty Paterson wasting an opportunity too.

“But after Wycombe scored I thought we looked nervous.

"In trying to win the game, we kept getting caught on the counter attack and that was disappointing.

"We were too loose and too many players did not have the desire to make it difficult for Wycombe to break us down.

"In truth, Wycombe missed as many chances as we did and the game could have been about 4-4.”

The result pushes Southend back up to 13th in the table, four points above the relegation zone.

And Tilson is now expecting a tricky end to the campaign without his star striker Lee Barnard who has now signed for Southampton.

"It is going to be a difficult season for us and as a squad we need to work hard for each other,” he said.

"There is not a lot of money to get players and everyone at the club has to stick together.”

Disappointed we didn't get the win, but happy with the point in the end. Very little came from the midfield and our defence looked ragged in the last 10/15 minutes.

Welcome young Paterson, you look like you've got something about you.

" We should have killed the game off"....says Tilson. Yet further dreaming unfortunately on his part, but his comments on the rest of the poor season are apt. Pity we didn't do as Scunthope have managed once in the Championship!
