SWIM girls from Southend High made a splash when they won through to the national finals of the annual Team Championships for Secondary Schools in Coventry for the first time in 12 years.
It was the 52nd annual hosting of the event and the quartet from the Southchurch Boulevard school were Amelia Knowles, Katie Willis, Blaise Copeland and Jessica Smoothy.
All are members of Southend Swimming club and coached by Helen Lawton.
They qualified for Coventry when they won the divisional round of the competition, held in December, in both the medley and freestyle relays.
At the finals Millfield School were again dominant and won the under-14 girls’ freestyle relay in a time of 1min 57.56secs with SHSG clocking 2:02.60 to finish 11th.
The under-14 girls’ medley relay was won in a time of 2:12.25 by Marist School, Ascot, and Southend High were again 11th with a time of 2:18.00.
“The girls enjoyed the experience and it gave them the opportunity to swim against some of the best schools in the country,” said a spokesman for the school.
