SOUTHEND Rugby Club recorded a third win in four game to see off Henley 33-10 on Saturday, but Ben Green was still not completely satisfied.
The Seasiders ran home five tries at Warners Bridge to maintain their recent run of good results.
But their director of rugby Green believes his team are still capable of more.
“It was a good result and performance at times but we’re still being too inconsistent in matches,” said Green.
“We had periods when we let Henley back into it when we shouldn’t have done and we do all still feel we can play better.
“That’s encouraging though because we’re still winning more matches than we lose.”
Southend stayed fifth in the standings after their latest triumph which was secured after an excellent start with two tries in the opening 16 minutes.
Andrew Frost touched down first with a try he also converted and Sid Hoult then also went over.
The full-back had to ground the ball in the corner though and the conversion from Frost was missed from a difficult angle.
Henley continued to battle hard, forcing Southend into conceding a succession of kickable penalties but their stand off Will Fulton had left his kicking boots behind and he missed three on the trot.
Southend were down to 14 men with Dan Johnson being sin-binned and were going through a wobbly patch.
Henley eventually took advantage when their full-back Tom Haynes scored a try on the stroke of half time to make it 12-5.
The second half saw Johnson back on and Southend in a steadier state of mind.
It soon showed dividends as centre Chris Vaughan weaved through the Henley defence and scored under the posts. Frost converted taking the score to 19-5.
Southend’s forwards started to turn the screw, dominating the scrums and set pieces before the Seasiders were forced into a change when Danny Cleare had to come on for scrum half Rhys Powell.
He took over wing duties from Mark Billings who went to scrum half. But it made no difference to Southend who continued to dominate.
Never ending forward pressure eventually led to hooker Charlie Keenan rumbling over the line for another try and the bonus point.
Frost’s reliable boot made the conversion and the score moved to 26-5.
Henley hit back with a try from prop Alex Penny but Southend deservedly had the final say when replacement Alan Barker powered over after more pressure from the forwards.
Frost had to wait 10 minutes to take the conversion as a result of what appeared to be a serious to Henley prop Aaron Ross but he was successful with the kick which completed his side’s scoring.
