MAINTAINING Southend United’s League One status is all the club’s new assistant manager David Webb is worried about.
Webb has made another unexpected return to Roots Hall to replace Paul Brush and work alongside Blues boss Steve Tilson.
But Webb, who has had four previous stints with the Shrimpers, insists he just wants to help the side avoid relegation and is not after Tilson’s job.
“I am not coming here to take over,” said Webb, 63. “I am here, to coin an old fashioned phrase, in a consultant role.
“Equally I’m not coming here to be insulted or to insult other people but to just help the team be the best it can.”
Blues have gone 10 games without a win and have now not triumphed since December. That poor run of results have seen them slip into the relegation zone.
But Webb was only too happy to come back and again team up with the club’s chairman Ron Martin.
“I really like Ron because he genuinely wants the best for Southend United and so I feel sorry for him when things aren’t going well,” said Webb.
“Ron asked me if there was anyway that I could help out and even though it meant dropping a few things I was willing to do it to help out until the end of the season.”
Webb’s first game alongside Tilson will come this Saturday against fellow strugglers Exeter City at Roots Hall.
And Webb is hoping for a winning start to his latest stint with the Shrimpers.
“What is important now is that we get some points on the board and it really doesn’t matter how we do that, but the Exeter game is the first cup final of many,” said Webb.
“It is of little gratitude to come off the pitch and say well we played well but we got beaten — play poorly and win will do at the moment.”
