Blues win another High Court reprieve

SOUTHEND United escaped being wound up over a disputed tax bill by the skin of its teeth this morning.

Blues chairman Ron Martin and his legal team won a 35-day adjournment of a winding up order brought by HMRC over a £183,000 debt.

The judge narrowly allowed the reprieve after hearing about detailed financial plans to settle the debt.

At least there is apparently a detailed financial plan I suppose...

But I thought that the whole of Ron Martin's argument was that we didn't HAVE a debt to HMRC, and that it was covered in other payments?

Ron's Houdini act continues and by the grace the club can limp forward to the next crisis.
With Chester City now history, Portsmouth and Cardiff in serious danger the Football League needs to urgently get their clubs in order. Football Clubs cannot continue to rely on a rich businessman to survive. It's not a healthy situation and the danger of a domino effect could well still happen. Football fans everywhere deserve a healthy football league but must also be realistic in there is no bottomless pit of money to ensure success. Hopefully at the end of this sad saga, Southend United can survive.

As sjreynolds143 mentions, I thought RM's "spin" was he didn't owe any money!! HMRC are saying we do, so I make that 1-1 and they've just hit the post. On top of the transfer embargo and non payment of wages, things are all rosey!!!

So what happens if HMRC come back in 35 days and win 2-1!!! Lets say (barring a small miracle) we go down this season, loose our best players, go into adminstration, get deducted the ten points next season and then stare Non League straight in the face!!!!

Thats some spin I would like to see...

So lets see if i have this right, the club has 35 days to pay a debt which is in fact an overpayment. The loan from the PFA is a bridging loan on usual commercial terms, so high level interest rate applies, in order to pay the main employees of the club. This on the back of falling adrift in the relegation zone and sacking the loyal assistant manager. One question, is there any accountablity of the Chairman and the Board?

Sainsburys bail out again? Ron Martin is looking increasingly foolish making regular appearances at the High Court. A big worry when you go back a couple of years playing in the Championship. A sorry state of affairs, pure and simple

A lot of us must either be stupid, cannot grasp the facts or have misunderstood what Ron Martin has been telling us, and that is, The Blues do NOT have a debt with HMRC, and guess what? he is now organising a financial solution to repay the debt (but what debt) of £200000!!! also the club are unable to pay the staff, where are we going to get financial backing from, what about the offer that was refused to input money earlier? Yes, the way it looks at the moment we will be doing a Luton in the not too distant future unless something is seriously done by the Right Honourable Mr Ron Martin, or has he no resources to fall back on to enable Tilson to get back into the loan/transfer market for players.

Is it just me or does everyone get a distinct smell of bull**** every time Ron Martin opens his mouth?

I must be a mushroom (kept in the dark and fed s**t) because like others I thought the tax man owed us money! Seems the Judge disagrees, and I would sooner believe a Judge than our so called Chairman! We also now owe the PFA, and have to pay that back and we have another transfer embargo. We are still told nothing is wrong (I note today we are told nothing at all!!). Come on Ron and the rest of the board come out and be honest, we are in trouble so admit it and lets see if we can all work together before it is too late. May be things are worse than even we think and the board are scared of coming out in public and admitting as much (Issomething being covered up?). I would sooner know the truth however bad it is this will avoid all this speculation. How can they expect us to buy season tickets when we may not exist next season! (I have already paid for mine can I get a refund? when I phoned to ask I was told no!!)

If Uncle Ron plays his delaying tactics much longer we could be relegated AND lose 10 points from our League 2 campaign.

Think if we are relegated one of Ron's words on his latest Blog will haunt all of us, "fatal". Probably means he'll pull the plug, so don't think you need worry about life in Div 2.

I cannot believe some people think things are all OK and the HMRC owe our club money ! They can call in a debt and they obviously think they have a case.
This is the third time we have been called in for this payment.
On top of this our players have had wages paid by the PFA as the club cannot cover costs.
Can we have some clarity please from the chairman and board. Our club is starting to look a little like Leeds and Notts county. Its not acceptable. What is going on ? Either our club live within our means or we become another Cardiff, Leeds, Pompy...........
What is going on, no spin, only clear facts please. Whatever the Chairman and Board think, its our club, the towns club !

Well we're looking worse than Leeds, at least they're getting promoted and have a top striker in Beckford!

Colchester U. had a crowd of just 3900 on Monday night, yet they can buy, maintain and pay the wages of a promotion chasing side. With average gates of roughly double this, can anybody explain why the Blues should be having their current financial problems.
Disregarding season ticket income, the cash receipts from the recent charlton game would have grossed at approx £120,000?
