St Albans 1, Thurrock 0

12:50pm Monday 15th March 2010

THURROCK'S hopes of capping their best ever season by making the play-offs appear to be fading fast after this third successive defeat.

They now lie down in ninth place, six points off the key fifth spot, and desperately need three points from tomorrow’s home game with Woking to relaunch their bid.

St Albans did just about enough to edge Saturday’s tight game thanks to a goal from Adam Everitt.

The defender capped an all-action display at both ends of the field by heading home the only goal of the afternoon at the end of the first-half.

Fleet saw an early headed chance for Lewis Smith well saved by home keeper Paul Bastock.

Then, when Fola Orilonishe’s run and cross set-up Smith again, Everitt and Peter Smith combined to clear off the line after Bastock superbly saved the original header.

Everitt headed Saints ahead from Jake Beecroft’s corner and was then at the forefront with several defensive blocks as Fleet hunted an equaliser late on.

Then Bastock made another outstanding save to deny Kenny Clark an equaliser deep into injury-time.
