Vernon: Scoring belief must be Blues’ goal

SCOTT Vernon reckons Blues must regain their belief in front of goal if they are to avoid relegation this season.

Steve Tilson’s side have scored just four goals in their last seven games.

And the on-loan Vernon, whose team drew 0-0 at home to Exeter City on Saturday, feels the Shrimpers must start to put away their chances to avoid a return to League Two.

“It was good to get a clean sheet but disappointing not to score at the other end,” said Vernon, 26, who is on loan from Colchester.

“At the moment we are lacking that little bit of belief in front of goal but it was a good defensive display and other than putting the ball in the back of the net we played well.

“I had a couple of chances and I was frustrated not to have put them away.

“The chance I had in the second half the keeper has made a good save. He made himself big and if he had gone down earlier I might have scored.

“But I was more disappointed with the chance in the first half as I felt I should have scored.”

>Southend United’s reserve team is in action this afternoon. Blues travel to Northampton Town for a 2pm kick-off.
