Close win gives new hope to Leighway

LEIGHWAY are keeping their challenge alive for the Men’s Premier Division title in the Southend and District Badminton Association League with a narrow 5-4 win over bottom club Locallife.

Michael and Steve Weingarten started the night well for Locallife then Jackie and Minh Tu made it 2-0.

Leighway pulled one back through David Gotts and Paul Stone before the Tu’s restored the home side’s two-rubber lead.

Leighway levelled the match courtesy of first John Masheter and John Stretch, then Gotts and Stone won their second rubber.

Simon Copeman and Matt Freeman put Leighway ahead for the first time on the night. The Weingartens then gave hope for Locallife by making it 4-4, but Gotts and Stone finished the match completing their maximum to make it 5-4 to Leighway.

In Men’s Division Three, Chase Seconds scored a 7-2 win away at David Lloyd as Daniel Efde with Ahsanur Rohman and Mark Petchey with Marc Holdich both recorded maximums for Chase.

Ladies’ Premier League leaders Leighway extended their lead with 5-1 win against Eastwood.

Lorna Booth and Marion Neale scored maximum points from their rubbers in a match with some close games.

FitzWimarc ladies’ seconds, Donna Venables, Dawn Terry, Sue Campbell and Alison Taiani, won 6-0 at Greensward seconds in Ladies’ Division One and are still in with a slim chance for the top spot.

FitzWimarc Thirds also took the honours in the mixed Divison Three match against Belle Vue Seconds, edging a 5-4 win to remain in second place. Although Teresa Morris and Darren Brooks scored maximum points for Belle Vue they still finished on the losing side.

Belle Vue and FitzWimarc also met in Veterans’ Division One. Belle Vue fared better in this encounter with a 5-1 victory.

Pat Lee and Julie Foreman gained maximum points and were assisted by John Marshall and Graham Howorth.
