Jesse on right track for Superteen success

BASILDON schoolboy Jesse Jones, 13, made a solid start to the season as he attempts to win back-to-back MRO Superteen Championships.

He achieved three wins and a second at the opening round held at Kent’s Brands Hatch circuit.

Jesse was on pole position for the weekend after qualifing in 58.607.

This was two seconds slower than his best time last year, but with the mercury hovering just above zero in the early morning air he was more than happy with the effort.

In fact race control confirmed later that times for all classes were a bit slower than normal.

For race one Jesse did not make the best of starts from his pole position and entered Paddock Hill Bend in third place.

However, he quickly disposed of the opposition and led the field over the line for every lap.

The cold conditions saw him have several tricky moments as his tyres were struggling to warm up in the cold conditions.

But he paid close attention to his pit board and paced himself accordingly to win by 2.6 seconds from Tommy Philip and Jake Dixon.

The second race was pretty much the same as the first for Jesse as he led the same pair home by two seconds.

The first race on the second day was a much closer affair with Jesse swapping places all race long with Dixon and Ty Jones.

This time over the line his margin of victory was a mere .056.

The last race of the weekend was the only one not to go Jesse’s way and it was Jake Dixon who led him home by just .059 of a second. Again the two young combatants slugged it out for the entire race around Brands’ shorter Indy circuit.

“Jesse was really chuffed with the results as before Brands Hatch has been a bit of a bogey track for him having had three big offs there last year,” said his mum Sue Cowell.

“He is hoping his change of fortune at the Kent circuit will continue when the youngsters support the BSB meeting for their opening round on April 4 and 5.”
