THE Cold Norton club’s men’s section held their annual Four Nations competition.

This is a long standing traditional competition over 18 holes of Stableford where members of all ages represent either England, Wales, Scotland or Ireland.

A shotgun start began proceedings with nearly 70 players competing and, after seemingly weeks of continual bad weather, the golfing gods did their very best by presenting golfers with one of the sunniest and driest days of the year so far.

The course itself was in surprisingly good condition considering the amount of rainfall of late.

England ran out winners closely followed by Ireland, Scotland came third leaving Wales, captained by Welshman for the day Rod “Taffy” Wellard, holding the wooden spoon.

The teams all enjoyed a great lunch and Derek Briggs presided over the prizegiving, handing the Trophy to England captain John Hatfield. The Individual winner Representing England was Jim Naylor with an excellent 39 points.

In second place, with a very good 37 points, was John “Jock” Musson, playing for Scotland.

Dave Gordon came in with best score on the front nine holes and Paul Collins won best back nine.

The other best individual team high scores were Graham Smith (England), Jim Gordon(Scotland) John Wilkins (Ireland) and Gary Romang(Wales) Medal competitions were hindered somewhat by the severe weather conditions which resulted in the Sunday event being cancelled.

However, the Saturday competition did take place with Richard Chamberlain winning Division One and Michael French Division Two.

The midweek medal survived and Division One winner was James Bance with Dave Mansfied taking Division Two.

The ladies managed to stage the five club and putter competition which saw Carol Davies as winner and Jo Harrison runner-up. The March ladies’ competition winner for the Rachel Ann Trophy was Val Ambrose with Celia Jackaman second.
