Southend United's Adam Barrett fumes over red card against Carlisle United

SOUTHEND United skipper Adam Barrett was left fuming after harshly going from hero to villain against Carlisle United on Saturday.

The determined defender headed home an equaliser as Blues fought back from two goals down to secure a 2-2 draw at Roots Hall.

But it was a bittersweet afternoon for the 30-year-old as he was sent off midway through the second half after being shown two yellow cards by referee Andy Woolmer.

“I just can’t believe I’ve been sent off for that, it’s an absolute joke,” said Barrett who will now miss tomorrow night’s home clash against Walsall.

“The first booking was for a sliding challenge when I’ve won the ball and the second was just so soft. I went to side foot the ball towards goal and their player got there first.

“I did make contact with him but come on, it’s never a booking.

“It just seems that everything that could go wrong for us, does go wrong for us at the moment.”

The draw against the Cumbrians means Southend have now gone 12 games without a win.

They remain four points from safety but Barrett was pleased by the spirit shown by his side after a disappointing start.

“We looked nervy early on and gave away some bad goals but we did well to come back,” said Barrett.

“We showed a lot of character and when it was 2-2, there was only one team who was going to go on and win it but it didn’t happen.

“We’re two unbeaten now though and need to keep on going to get a win as quickly as we can — even if we play terribly and scrape a 1-0.”
