Manor bounce back after being booted out of cup

IT has been a mixed week for Southend Manor.

Following Wednesday night’s meeting of clubs they discovered that there would be no reprieve for them in the Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy.

The Southchurch Park club were unable to fulfil the previous weekend’s semi-final at Bethnal Green United due to illness.

Having six players laid low with sickness and diahorrea plus other problems on eligibility for the competition meant that Manor would have had only seven players for the game.

But a statement issued read: “The Essex Senior League management committee has reluctantly been required to remove Southend Manor Football Club from this season’s Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy at the semi-final stage.

“This decision has been brought about by a combination of the club having insufficient players having made the necessary two appearances in prior matches in order to qualify for selection in a semi final, together with unforeseen diahorrea and sickness bug which attacked the squad within 48 hours of the scheduled tie.”

The decision means that Bethnal Green meet Takeley for the trophy at Burnham Ramblers on Easter Monday (April 5) at 3pm.

But Manor quickly bounced back in the league on Saturday to beat Bowers and Pitsea 4-0 thanks to Wilf Msiska’s hat-trick and an own goal.

Bowers had beaten Basildon United 1-0 at Crown Avenue on Thursday with a Craig Gillam goal doing the damage against his old club.

On Saturday, Basildon were held 0-0 at home by bottom club Mauritius Sports, while Hullbridge Sports had two goals from Gary Patterson to thank for their 2-2 draw at Lower Road with second-from-bottom Clapton.

Games tomorrow include Hullbridge Sports v Southend Manor, Sawbridgeworth v Basildon United and Witham v Bowers and Pitsea.

Other results: Barking 0, Enfield 1893 2; Barkingside 2, Takeley 0; Burnham Ramblers 1, Bethnal Green 2; London APSA 1, Tiptree 0; Witham 1, Eton Manor 1.
