SOUTHEND United manager Steve Tilson wants to keep unsettled right-back Simon Francis at Roots Hall.

The 25-year-old has told the Echo he would like to leave following Blues’ relegation in to League Two.

But Tilson hopes Francis, who was named the club’s player of the year last season, will still be with the club next year.

“Simon had a good season last year and of course I hope he’s still here next season, “said Tilson.

“Obviously I appreciate that every player wants to play at the highest level but I signed Simon four years ago and he still remains an important part of my team.

“It is no surprise that other sides have enquired about it him already but it would be really good for the team if he stayed.”

If Francis does stay for another season though, Blues run the risk of losing him on a free transfer as he has already told them he will not be signing a new deal when his current contract expires in 12 months time.

The right back, who has made 180 appearances for Blues, is keen to play at a higher level and would welcome the opportunity to play for either a top League One side or a Championship club.

But he is understood not to be the only player facing an uncertain future at the club, as doubts also surround goalkeeper Steve Mildenhall, skipper Adam Barrett, plus midfielders Alan McCormack and Franck Moussa.
