ANDREW Frost has his sights set on success with Southend Rugby Club this season.

The Seasiders kick off their National Two South campaign with a home clash against Henley on Saturday.

And having recovered from a career-threatening eye injury, Frost cannot wait to get going.

“I’m really looking forward to the season starting and getting underway,” said the 26-year-old winger.

“Being out injured has been a bit of a nightmare, so I can’t wait to start playing again if I’m selected, and hopefully we can start the season with a win.”

Frost had scored 212 points in 18 appearances last season before suffering a torn retina in February.

That kept him out for the rest of the season and also came close to ending his career.

“I had to have emergency surgery and I was told by a few doctors not to play again,” said Frost.

“But I had a chat with the man who did the surgery on me and he just said ‘who I am to tell you to stop doing something you love’.

“I’m certainly not ready to retire either and that’s why I’m delighted I can carry on.”

Despite continuing playing, Frost remains realistic and knows he must continue to monitor the injury.

“It’s something which isn’t going to suddenly get better, but they can stop it getting worse,” said Frost.

“We will just have to play it ear, but I’m going to try and stop tackling people with my eyes!”

Frost missed the final three months of last season, but without him Southend still shone, winning seven of their last eight games.

And the Hadleigh-based kicker wants to carry that form in to the new campaign.

“We’re in great shape and want to keep on doing well,” said Frost.

“We’re entering the unknown because we don’t know what the other teams are going to be like, but we’re looking forward to the challenge and feel confident about our chances.”
