RHYS Evans is hoping his penalty saving heroics can help his claims for a regular starting slot at Southend United.
The 28-year-old goalkeeper saved two of Gillingham’s six penalties to help Blues triumph on his debut at Roots Hall on Tuesday night.
And he is now hungry for further first team chances having started the season on the bench.
“I couldn’t have done a lot more, but it’s up to the manager now,” said Evans, who is battling with Glenn Morris to be Southend’s number one.
“I was very disappointed not to have started the season because I thought I had done enough in pre-season, but I respect the manager’s decision.
“I’ll keep going and see what happens.
“Glenn has done pretty well, but what else can I do?
“If I get an opportunity I have to try to take it and hopefully I’ve done that a little bit against Gillingham.”
