Ex-football stars tee off at Captains’ Cup


THE golfers turned out in force at the Lords Golf and Country Club in Rayleigh to help raise money for their captain’s chosen charity, the Great Ormond Street Hospital and the Variety Club Childrens Charity.

With the cadet and senior five-day competitions already reported, it was the turn of the single stableford, which saw Don Oakley come in with the winning score of 38 points ahead of Darryl Aziz who had 39 points Winning for the ladies was Lucy Hensby with 37 points ahead of Angela Hever who had 34 points Taking the mixed doubles prize, playing to a four ball betterball format, was the partnership of Lenny Fordham and Pam Chlopas, who came in with 48 points closely followed by John Cosgrove and Karen Simpson who had 47 points Taking the Captain’s Cup on countback was David Ash (14) beating Colin Brett (ten) when both came in with 41 points In third place was Graham Jupp (19) who had 40 points Over on the Earls course, playing a stableford, Pat Packer came out the winner beating Bob Sarjentson, while winning for the ladies was Ruth Humphreys ahead of Maisie Coleman The highlight of the week was the Captains Celebrity Day, which saw 23 teams take part The winning team was former Tottenham player Ossie Ardiles/Nick Seaby/Kevin Tibble and Nick Livermore with 97 points ahead of Tony Cottee/Syd Williamson/George Williamson and Simon Williamson who finished with 93 points In third place was Martin Chivers/Steve Corner/Noel McEvoy and George McEvoy with 92 points The highest celebrity was Martin Chivers who beat Dave Jessup and Paul Jones on the back nine when all came in with 40 points Winning the Captain’s challenge with a hole-in-one on the fifth hole was Lord’s member Debbie Suttie.
