MARSHALL Tutu of Woodford Wells has won his first Essex Closed titles at Thorpe Bay.
Wells won both the 18 and under and 21 and under singles without dropping a single set.
In the older age-group, he beat higher rated and home club player, Matthew Pearce.
And, in recognition of his brilliant play, Tutu was also awarded the most improved player of the tournament award.
Others winners included Andrew Berry from Westcliff Hardcourts, who triumphed in the boys’ 11 and under singles.
Jacob Ducksbury (DL Basildon) beat home player Edward Pudney in a long and exciting match in the 11 and under singles.
Another in form player was Lewis Thompson (Woodford Wells), who won the 14 and under singles event last year, won the 16 and under singles event, beating Louis Watts (DL Basildon) in the final.
In the girls’ events, Carys Gilbert (DL Basildon) also won her first Essex Closed title, beating Millennia Severino in the 18 and under singles final.
Thorpe Bay player Harry Randle teamed up with club-mate, Robert Carter and together they won the 18 and under boys’ doubles.
Sam Bayda (Westcliff Hardcourts) reached the last 16 at the Essex Closed and was awarded the Roslin Beach Hotel Trophy for the most improved player aged under 14.
The tournament organisers were also keen to thank the volunteers at Thorpe Bay LTC.
“Without them, this tournament would not have happened,” said a spokesman for the event.
The Referee’s Trophy was awarded to Nicola Calverley (Billericay).
