POLICE have arrested a man over an alleged racist incident during Southend United’s game at Plymouth Argyle on Saturday.
Devon and Cornwall Police said a man at the match “allegedly shouted racial abuse comments towards the playing area”.
A 33-year-old from Plymouth was arrested on suspicion of causing racially aggravated harassment during the League Two clash with Bilel Mohsni believed to be the Blues player in question.
The man was later released on bail until Thursday March 8 pending further enquiries and Plymouth Argyle have launched their own investigation.
The club said in a statement: “We are proud to be a family club, where people of all abilities, ages, beliefs, genders, races, religions and sexual orientation can unite to enjoy the beautiful game’.
“As a club, we have always embraced players and supporters of many nationalities and creeds; this is our heritage and our legacy.
“Prejudice and hatred simply do not mix with supporting our team.”
It added: “We have excluded people for racist behaviour previously and will have no hesitation in taking this action again.
“We urge supporters who see any signs of any form of anti-social behaviour to inform us immediately.”
Argyle drew 2-2 with Southend, who say they will co-operate fully in any investigation Plymouth carry out.
Mohsni was unavailable for comment.
