Southend United 0, Rotherham United 2

Elliot Benyon battles for the ball Elliot Benyon battles for the ball

SOUTHEND United's ground staff and supporters worked tirelessly to make sure Blues' clash with Rotherham United went ahead at a freezing Roots Hall tonight.

But, after Paul Sturrock's side produced another sub-standard showing in suffering a 2-0 defeat against the Millers, they are probably now wishing they had not bothered.

Southend were again below par, particularly in the second half, as they sunk to a third defeat in four games.

And their push for automatic promotion is now seriously in doubt.

Shaun Harrad put the visitors ahead on his debut after signing on loan from Bury and former Blues striker Alex Revell then sealed Rotherham's victory late on.

Revell also fired out an early warning when he shot straight at Southend goalkeeper Glenn Morris from 18 yards after just two minutes but Blues were immediately back on top.

As a result, Liam Dickinson fired a snap shot wide of the left post from 16 yards before Ryan Hall’s fifth minute header from Michael Timlin’s left wing cross was impressively tipped over the crossbar by Rotherham goalkeeper Rhys Taylor.

The save soon increased in significance too as the Millers opened the scoring just four minutes later with Harrad on target.

The striker charged down an attempted clearance from Chris Barker before guiding the ball in to the left hand side of the goal from the edge of the penalty area with the outside of his right foot.

Blues thought they had grabbed an immediate equaliser when Elliot Benyon poked the ball home from close range following a half cleared right wing corner from Hall.

But the effort was ruled out for offside, much to the annoyance of the striker who claimed the ball had been knocked back in to his path by a Rotherham player.

Southend again came close to drawing level in the 26th minute when a deflected shot from Timlin rolled in to the path of Hall at the back post.

However, after the winger had cut back inside on to his left foot, his low shot was diverted wide of the right post by Taylor’s legs.

Rotherham replied with Harrad heading straight at Morris from six yards before Blues were denied an equaliser in the 32nd minute when Millers winger Sam Wood cleared the ball off the goal-line while under pressure from Benyon following another right wing corner from Hall.

Southend went close again at the start of the second half with Bilel Mohsni heading Hall’s deep free-kick straight at Taylor before Anthony Grant fired over from 12 yards after the ball deflected in to his path.

Grant then fired straight at Taylor from long range and, in the 64th minute, Mohsni headed a left wing corner from Hall against the outside of the right post.

Blues boss Paul Sturrock tried to get his side going by making a double substitution which saw both Jack Sampson and Neil Harris enter the action.

But they were unable to get Southend back in to the game and the Millers sealed their victory in the 83rd minute with Revell on target.

The striker won the ball off Barker before drilling home a low shot from 20 yards via the inside of the left post.

He then immediately charged towards the directors box to celebrate in front of Blues' ex chief executive Geoffrey King who publicly criticised Revell when he departed Roots Hall to join Swindon Town on loan in September 2009.

The effort also killed off any hopes of Southend comeback and ensured Rotherham ended a run of five successive defeats against Blues.

Two issues tonight, who in Southend United was hell bent in getting this game on, and secondly once again Sturrock gets his team selection wrong.
As I have said previously kiss any promotion good bye this season, the players are just not good enough.

The whole side were a total shambles apart from Mosni who showed a lot of character.
The fans should have their money back under the trade descrioptions act

Simple, Sturrock out the man who has led us down the garden path with his misfit signings.
Let's have a manager that can get a team to play some football and have a pattern to their play.

On the displays this season my season card will not be renewed next season

11 men on sufc's team tonight, the only one I was saw was mohsni, yet again the Only one who cared, showed passion & got a head to every ball.
Someone please explain why Dickinson is always in the first team, I can never work out what he does, he can't run, he doesn't even bother, when he gets the ball he loses it & looks at the ref all the time. Well done mohsni tonight!

Dickinson was poor but the other new striker doesnt close down, gets bullied off the ball, has no pace and doesnt win headers. Someone tell me what he has got that Harris and Blair havent. He is rubbish. Samson is far better and gets 10 minutes. Martin makes chances and is on the bench. Moshni for all his faults is the only player showing any passion. Our other defenders? Not sure they know the meaning of the word defend. Absolutely awful tonight. Phillips is so badly missed its unreal. And Sturrock get Moshni up front - he wins more headers than Dickinson and is a more natural striker. Tonight - absolute total RUBBISH (apart from Moshni).

Are we a team of chokers? 3 big games against Swindon lost, only game on last week and a chance to go top and threw away a 2 goal lead in 4 mins, last night a chance to bank the points and guess what ? And Alex Revell scoring !! that hurt

I am not at all surprised we have been beaten once again. We have been punching above our weight for a long while now and our league position is more by luck than by playing good football.I have been to every home game except for last night and a fair few away games and can honestly say i have rarely seen us playing good flowing football, all i have witnessed is endless hoof ball.Moshni is the only player in the team who gives 100% every match. The team selection last night was wrong we started of with a defensive line up and payed the price.Paul Sturrock must take the blame as well,he is the manager and he selcted the wrong starting line up. why David Martin did not start is beyond me he has been one of the brighter players the last couple of games.A spineless performance by all who played last night apart from Moshni and Martin when he came on.How these players can hold their heads up this morning after fans worked for days to clear the pitch and were rewarded with that rubbish is beyond me.

Dickinson did nothing he just trys to look good running around flat footed, yet he's out to impress, was that with his new hair cut?
Defence, Gilbert, what was he doing?
Then at the end when it was too late, mohsni got pushed up front, should of happened earlier on.
And Morris, I said from the first game back we should have got and kept Daniels and now we are paying the price
Should of just turnt our floodights off

Dickinson doesn't impress me, must be his feet are too big. He wears those bright yellow boots with his feet at 10 to 2 and as they always say, you've got to be good to wear yellow boots. He's not.

Somebody tell me why Prosser isnt in at left back. Gilbert has been well below par for weeks. Prosser has played there and cannot play as badly as Gilbert is at the moment. If Sturrock had learnt from the Northampton away game which was a success - Hall and Martin on the wings - Dicko and Samson through the middle. Moshni instead of Dicko in there as well and you've got goals.

Looking at the stats the wheels started to come off the promotion bus after the home win in the cup over Preston. Only won 1 game down the hall out of 8 (drawn 3 and lost 4) and only 2 out of 6 away (drew 1 and lost 3) in all competitions meaning (all but) lost place in the top 3 and knocked out of both cup competitions. It's not too late to stem the tide and finish top 3 but changes need to be made to bring back the results that were enjoyed pre Preston home. In Luggy we trust? 17 games, 51 points to play for. COYB!

I have heard that Sturrock wants to improve Southend. When are you going Paul. You were negative at Plymouth at and are negative with Southend. How you can play Peter Gilbert week in week outt is amazing. He struggles defensively and offers nothing going forward. Herd offered more but you let him go.

Why does nobody ever seem to mention Barker when it comes to who was poor and who should be dropped.
He has been consistently at fault for goals over the last few weeks and does not lead the team at all.
OK strikers aren't scoring enough buit Barker and Morris are both very average players indeed.
