Southend United's Elliot Benyon: Time to get back on track

ELLIOT Benyon wants to get Southend United's season back on track with a win at Gillingham tomorrow night. Benyon was recalled to the starting line-up for Friday night's 2-0 defeat against Rotherham United at Roots Hall.

And he is now desperate to fire Blues back to winning ways.

“We need to go to Gillingham and put right what's been going wrong,” said Benyon.

“Friday was one of those nights for us when I think we could've stayed out there all evening and we wouldn't have scored.

“That seems to be how things are going for us at the moment but we have an immediate opportunity to get back on track now.

“It's on television as well and it's a chance for us to show the rest of the league what we're really about.”

Victory at Priestfield would also put Southend back on top of the League Two table.

But Benyon knows that Blues must play better than they did against Rotherham if they are to pick up all three points.

“It was difficult conditions and the end we were playing towards the second half was a joke because it was so icy but that's no excuse and we didn't play well,” said Benyon.

“It was a frustrating night for everyone including myself as I came close to scoring a couple of times.

“However, we need to regroup now and go again for the Gillingham game.”

Paul Sturrock has again threatened to make a number of changes for the clash with David Martin and Pat Baldwin among those being considered for a recall.

Jack Sampson could also start in attack as Blues are hopeful of extending his loan spell from Bolton Wanderers.

But Sturrock is not sure if centre-back Mark Phillips will be ready to return from a groin problem.

“I was told two weeks ago he was going to be fit so I really don't know when he will be available again,” said the Scotsman.

The clash will see Sean Clohessy facing his former side, along with Neil Harris.

Let's hope that the showing of the game on tv doesn't go to their heads!

If Sturrock is talking about only picking players who listen to him, then we're going to offer up a 5-a-side team.

On another tact, anyone heard about Freddie Eastwood? he must have a long term injury as he never features for Cov.
