SOUTHEND United winger David Martin faces a race against time to be fit for Saturday’s showdown with Crewe Alexandra.
Martin picked up a foot problem during Monday’s 2-1 win at Gillingham and left the stadium on crutches.
But, although he does not fear an extended spell out of action, Martin is not sure he will be able to take on the Railwaymen.
“It’s touch and go whether or not I’ll be fit for the weekend if I’m honest,” said Martin.
“The crutches are just a precaution and just to make sure I keep the weight off the injury.
“I shouldn’t have to use them after tonight though and we’re hoping it’s just bad bruising.
“It shouldn’t be anything too serious but we’re going to have to see how it settles down.
“I obviously want to play and we have a few days to work on it, so hopefully I will be able to play.”
Martin suffered the injury when his foot struck the bottom of an opponent’s boot as he cleared the ball midway through the second half. And he was gutted to have to come off.
“I tried to carry on but there was no way I could and the manager realised that too,” said the 26-year-old.
“It was disappointing because I was back in the team and I felt it was going well too."
