Basildon beat Chelmsford to make it six on the bounce

SECOND placed Basildon secured a sixth straight win, beating Chelmsford 22-5.

In windy and wet conditions both sides played some entertaining rugby.

But it was the power of the Basildon forward pack which made the difference.

Basildon played in to the elements in the first half and, after a period of sustained pressure, stand in scrum half JD O’Mahoney went over on the blind side following a five metre scrum.

The home side continued to dominate possession but Chelmsford were up to the challenge and showed glimpses of attacking prowess when they got the ball.

In fact, it was the visitors who scored the best try of the match with a sweeping 60 metre move following a Basildon mistake to make it 5-5 at half-time.

The second period continued in the same vein with the Basildon pack winning all their tight ball and managing to disrupt the visitors.

Second row Ryan Creasey was leaping well in the line out and some strong driving from the rest of the pack resulted in a try for flanker Joe Green.

And the home side’s domination of the scrum was then rewarded with a pushover try for number eight Daniel Kemp.

It was all Basildon for the rest of the match and, with five minutes to go, Green got his second try following another catch and drive by the home pack.

Winger Brad Johnson struck a superb conversion from out wide.

Green was happy with his two tries but pointed out it was the whole pack which deserved the credit, particularly man of the match prop Jim Harman.

Basildon: White, Rowley, Dieu de la Bellefontaine, Howard, Johnson, Meadows, O’Mahoney, Stevens, Baker, Harman, Creasey, Crowhurst, Chandler, Kemp, Green.
