Seevic girls triumph
11:33am Tuesday 12th June 2012 in Sport
Seevic College ladies football team have won the British Colleges National Final.
The team defeated Barnsley College 2-0 in the final with goals coming from Liz Newcomb and Emma Sherwood.
Seevic captain Katie Hartigan, 17, from Rochford, said: “We have had a reasonable season in the league, however we have more than made up for it with an incredible cup run.
“I was very proud and lucky to lead the team out.
“The whole team battled really hard and played well as a team.
“As captain I had the honour to lift the cup and the whole team celebrated in this well-deserved victory.”
After overcoming Itchen College, from Plymouth, in the semi-final, the Benfleet-based college then had to play Barnsley College. Barnsley started the game strongly and Seevic had to rely on their goalkeeper Ellise Strickland, 17, from Benfleet, to keep them in the game. After 20 minutes, the game settled and Seevic started to create their own chances; one of these fell to Newcomb, 17, from Basildon, who calmly lobbed the keeper from 20 yards to put her side 1-0 up.
In the second half, Seevic defended well and restricted the opposition to long-range shots. From a corner, Sherwood, 19 from Stanford-le-Hope, made a far post run to head in, this put Seevic 2-0 up which is what the score remained until the end of the game.
Coach Paul Smith said, “This is one of the best moments – getting a team to a National Final and winning it.
“We don’t have the backing and support of professional football clubs like so many of the teams we play against and so to compete against and beat these teams is great.”
