Basildon Rugby Club start life in London One North against Old Haberdashers

BASILDON Rugby Club face a ‘momentous day’ in their history tomorrow when they begin their first ever London One North season at home to Old Haberdashers.

The New Town side won two successive promotions to earn the right to play at their highest ever level.

But the club’s press officer Derek Lockett insists the team know they will be in for a tough test this term.

“We’re under no illusions as to how hard this season will be for us but we’re looking forward to the challenge and tomorrow is a momentous day in our history,” said Lockett.

“This is the highest league we have ever played in but we’re aware it is a big step up from the division we played in last year and staying up is very much our main priority this season.”

Basildon’s cause has not been helped by the departure of full-back JD O’Mahoney who has returned home to Ireland while number eight Daniel Kemp has joined Romford.

However, the remaining players are looking forward to testing themselves at a higher level in front of what should be a large crowd.

“We should have quite a few people coming down to watch and Old Haberdashers are bringing a few for the lunch we have before,” said Lockett.

“They are also new to the league after winning London Two North West last season so we’re both starting out against each other and hopefully we can come out on top."

The match was originally due to be played at Old Haberdashers but had to be switched as cricket is still being played at their home ground.
