Basildon and Rochford both suffer defeats in London One North
Basildon began life in London One North with a 30-8 defeat at home to Old Haberdashers.
Basildon, who won two successive promotions to make it to their highest ever level in the history, were overpowered in the tight from the start.
After five minutes they conceded a penalty try for persistent scum offences near their line and Haberdashers continued to exert pressure up front.
That was rewarded with a penalty kick on 22 minutes but Basildon battled back and, following a break from full back Ben White, winger Zac Jones finished smartly in the corner.
But the visitors scored one more penalty to lead 13-5 at half-time. Basildon rallied briefly in the second half when a Brad Johnson penalty reduced the deficit to five points but Haberdashers then showed their superiority with three unanswered tries.
It was an even worse day for Rochford Hundred in the same league as they were thrashed 99-0 at Bury St Edmunds.
Bury bagged 15 tries, with Kenny Eggars scoring five of them during a disappointing afternoon for Rochford.
And that left their first team manager Graham Pratt a frustrated figure at the final whistle.
“We were given a rugby lesson which we need to take on board with some serious thinking” said Pratt.
“We have to make sure lessons are learnt before facing Colchester at home this week.”
