Essex Cricket Club's Paul Grayson: Youngsters show future is bright
WE’VE played with a lot more consistency in a four-day cricket in the second half of the season and it’s given us a good chance to blood some of our younger players.
Tom Westley has come on leaps and bounds, Jaik Mickleburgh has come in and done well and Ben Foakes has had an opportunity to play in this format.
So we are looking forward to a bright future for them at the club.
But we were hit hard by the weather.
I would never use that as an excuse because if you play in England you accept that’s what our summers are like, but it’s the timing of the bad weather which has been particularly frustrating and last week against Derbyshire we think we could have won that match.
What we do next season will depend on what happens with some ongoing contract negotiations.
Some of the lads have already agreed new deals, and most of the players we want to keep have been offered contracts.
Now it’s just a case of sitting down and getting them sorted out over the next week or so and once that is done we’ll have a better idea of the players we’ll have for next year.
