Rochford Hundred beaten by Colchester, despite improved display

ROCHFORD  Hundred produced a vastly improved performance against Colchester on Saturday, but were eventually seen off 40-27 by the visitors.

Just a week after being trounced 99-0 by Bury St Edmunds, Rochford played some excellent rugby.

And, despite the defeat, first team manager Graham Pratt was encouraged by the display.

“We had our chances to win it and that will definitely boost our confidence because Colchester are a quality side,” said Pratt.

“When errors are made or space becomes available they put it to their advantage and that's unfortunately what happened.

“But it was a huge improvement and we certainly gave them a scare because the result was in the balance right up until the final few minutes.”

That did not seem to be case early on though as Colchester, who narrowly missed out on promotion last season, raced in to an early 19-0 lead courtesy of three tries, two of which were converted.

However, Rochford got back in to the game with an unconverted try from Sam Barnes before Laurie Scaniglia-Cooke also touched down.

Robert Prior added the conversion to cut Colchester's lead to 19-12 but the visitors replied with a converted try of their own to lead 26-12 at the break.

Rochford then started the second half brightly with Prior kicking a penalty before he also scored a try to put his side to within six points of the visitors.

They stretched that advantage with a converted try but Rochford refused to give in and a try from captain Matt Stewart, which Darren Spencer converted, made it 33-27.

That set up a nail biting final few minutes but Colchester made sure of the win late on with a break-away try which was converted.
