SOUTHEND United’s Ryan Cresswell is gunning for his best ever goalscoring season.

The Blues’centre-back has hit the back of the net three times in his last four games.

And he hopes history can repeat itself at Cheltenham Town this weekend to help him get nearer his best tally of five.

“The last time I played against Cheltenham I scored the winning goal in the last minute and it would great if the same could happen on Saturday,” said Cresswell.

“The most goals I’ve ever scored in a season is five so I’m aiming to beat that this year and the way it’s going at the moment I might even do it before the end of the month!

“I think I’ve got something like 12 or 13 goals in my last 40 or 50 games but that’s been spread across different seasons and it would be nice to do it in the same year now.”

Cresswell’s latest strike came during last Saturday’s 3-1 win over Dagenham and Redbridge at Roots Hall when he netted a close range volley in the second half.

But he has not been gloating about his new found goalscoring form.

“The strikers have been saying is there any chance of me letting them score some goals but I haven’t been saying anything,” said Cresswell.

“To be honest I don’t really mind who scores if we keep on winning matches and it’s been great to have got victories in the last three.

“We want to try and keep that going for us as long as we can but we have two tough away games coming up now.”

Southend head to Cheltenham Town, who also reached the play-offs last season, this weekend.

And the defender is expecting a difficult afternoon.

“Cheltenham were a strong and physical side last year when I played them last year and I’m expecting the same on Saturday,” said Cresswell.

“But we’re on a good run and will go there confident of getting a result.”

I hope this article is not an unlucky omen, and he gets red-carded! Cresswell is one of the best signings Sturrock has made, and is an Adan Barratt figure, both in looks and whole-hearted approach in both penalty boxes , but probably a more commanding defender.

Agree. A very good signing in a very messy pre-season transfer period especially as a number of clubs were after him. Reckon he will be a big player for us this season barring any injuries.
Resemblence to Barrett is uncanny!
