Southend United manager Paul Sturrock: We should have had a penalty
12:57am Wednesday 19th September 2012 in Sport By Chris Phillips
Danny Kedwell fires home the only goal of the game from the penalty spot
SOUTHEND United manager Paul Sturrock felt his side should have been awarded a penalty of their own just moments before Danny Kedwell's match winning spot-kick for Gillingham on Tuesday night.
The Blues boss remains certain Michael Timlin was upended inside the area by Gills midfielder Charlie Allen.
And he could not believe referee Philip Gibbs opted to wave away his side's protests.
“It's a certain penalty and there's just no doubt about that,” said Sturrock.
“The referee has said that Tims has put his head down but I don't think that's the case at all.
“He's then given Gillingham a soft penalty just a couple of minutes later and it's hard to take.
“However, we should still have taken something from the game and I didn't think we deserved to lose.”
Kedwell's penalty just before half-time proved to be the difference between the two teams, despite the Gills playing the whole of the second period with 10 men after Bradley Dack was sent off for a poor challenge on Mark Phillips.
But Blues were unable to make their extra man count and that frustrated Sturrock.
“I think our final cross or shot just wasn't good enough and we had a couple of players who were a little bit out of sorts,” said Sturrock.
“Two big decisions from the referee haven't helped either and overall it's been a disappointing evening.”

At the other end, our penalty shout, the contact does not have to be high if the defender does not make contact first with the ball. if this happened I will agree with you however from our point of view, not ideal, it appeared Timlin got there first. I do have to mention that Burton's challenges on our keeper left a lot to be desired and felt that the referees performance in the first half was probably the worst I have witnesed or both teams in nearly 40 years of watching Southend. I thought that the Gills defence was excellent and restricted us to only getting a couple of good efforts on target to test your keeper. Time will tell where be both end up although knowing Mad Dog I think we will both be there or thereabouts.
All due respect Mr Sturrock, I am a Gills fan, and am always fair in my opinion of games. Although your side were very unlucky not to have come away with something, I since sour grapes. I was behind the goal for that penalty decision, and the ref, despite his poor performance, was right. Contact was made 18 inches to 2 feet from the ground. I'd say that was low, wouldn't you? The ref gave us barely anything bar the penalty, which appeared soft but I was up the other end. Not one bit of praise for our defensive display? I think that's worth a mention as it was against a good side in Southend who were scoring goals for fun. I mind that disappointing.
