Richard McEvoy knocked down by Italian bogeys

RICHARD McEvoy went close to picking up the big result he needs in Italy, but bogies in his final two rounds saw him fall down the leader board.
The Thorpe Hall pro put together two excellent opening rounds to make the cut at the BMW Italian Open, and was in third and eyeing up a top 10 finish heading into the weekend’s action in Turin.
But a double bogey on the second hole at the Royal Park I Roveri on Saturday set the tone for two inconsistent closing rounds and saw the Leigh golfer drop 24 places to finish in tied 53rd.
That still pocketed McEvoy 5,400 euros in prize money and moved him up one place in the Race to Dubai rankings to 142nd.
But with top 10 spots earning at least 27,800 euros it was a chance missed to move McEvoy closer to the top 115th spot he needs to retain his playing card for next year’s European Tour.
Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño held off the challenge of Garth Mulroy to win the tournament by two shots.
The result was the perfect boost for the 31-year-old after he narrowly failed to qualify for José María Olazábal’s Ryder Cup team.
