Southend Rugby Club missing Mark Billings and Harry Branch for crunch clash at Launceston
SOUTHEND will be without Mark Billings and Harry Branch for tomorrow’s crunch clash at Launceston.
Full-back Billings misses out with a back problem he picked up in the warm-up before last weekend’s 33-22 defeat to Taunton, while scrum half Branch suffered an ankle injury during the game.
They will both miss out this weekend but the Seasiders’ director of rugby Chris Green is demanding a vastly improved display from his side.
“The injuries are disappointing but we have players to come in and we need to see a reaction from last weekend’s defeat,” said Green.
“The first half last week just wasn’t acceptable and we’ve had words about what went wrong.
“I’m taking it as a given that the players will be up for the game this weekend.
“We have the ability in our team but you need to have more than that and we have to do better tomorrow.”
With Branch out injured, Perry Sansom looks set to start tomorrow’s game at scrum half with Bradley Burr coming in at full-back.
And Green is expecting a close-fought game against a Launceston side who are just one point and one place above Southend in the National Two South table.
“Launceston only lost to the league leaders Henley by nine or 10 points last weekend and I’m sure they will be hard opponents for us,” said Green.
“It’s a tough place to go but we want to get back on track and if we play like we can and show the right attitude, then I think we can get a result.”
However, the Seasiders go into the game having lost four of their six matches so far this season and they will still be missing influential prop forward Michael Guess this weekend and prolific points scorer Andrew Frost who are both injured.
