Early start sets Mark on the way to victory

A CRACKING 88lb 12oz haul saw Mark Pickett take first place at Sunday's Ridley Angling Products Gloucester Park Open.

The Basildon event saw the top seven anglers averaging more than 50lb each.

Pickett fished halfway along the cockle bank where he used a waggler and 8mm pellets to land 11 carp and three chub.

Presenting his baits at mid-water, Pickett stamped his authority early on by landing nine carp and two chub in the first three hours.

A quiet spell followed before he added more two carp and a further chub in the last hour.

Gloucester Park regular Ray Lilley took second place with seven carp for 68lb 12oz.

Lilley fished the eastern end of the cockle bank where he used mini boilie baits to take all of his fish in the first four hours of the match.

Five of the carp fell to waggler tactics, with the other two taken on the quivertip.

Third place went to Wayne Candy with a tremendous 56lb silver fish haul.

Fishing the centre of the cockle bank Candy targeted bream from the starting whistle.

Pole tactics presenting baits at 13m produced two good bream before he noticed fish bubbling slightly further out.

After feeding for a few minutes he moved out to the 14m line to take fish every put in.

Later in the match the fish moved out to 15m and then 16m, forcing Candy to add more sections to his pole.

Eventually fish moved even further out, leaving him struggling for just the odd fish during the last hour of the match.

Fourth-place man Paul Stanley also got amongst the silver fish to include 27lb of bream in his 40lb catch.

Stanley started fishing a feeder against the island to take two carp totalling 13lb.

He then switched to the pole line to take a procession of fish on pellet and paste baits.

Frank Vickers took fifth place with 34lb 4oz, followed closely by Alec Busby with 31lb 8oz, and Steve Lloyd with 31lb.
