THE Northlands Park road lake has rewarded Ian Caldwell with a personal best 24lb mirror carp, just weeks after producing his previous best fish of 23lb 10oz.

Caldwell has only fished at the Basildon water three times. On his first session he saw a nearby angler land a 27lb carp, with the next two visits both producing big carp to his own rods.

Caldwell's latest big fish came from the swim next to the wooden platform. After spotting several large carp cruising just under the surface he presented a pineapple pop up boilie about 20 yards out on a Zig Rig.

He did not have to wait long, with the 24-pounder taking the bait less than 30 minutes later.

Northlands Park regular Tom Butler made the most of a short session at the road lake to land yet another 20lb-plus specimen from the venue. His latest carp, a 21lb common, fell to a homemade boilie presented in the near margins.

Chris Smith left Northlands Park with a smile on his face after landing a new personal best 20lb 12oz common carp.

The big fish, his first ever 20-pounder, came from the cafe lake, where he cast a Mainline boilie to the big reed bed.

Former Northlands Park regular Paul Wagg has dusted his rods off after a long lay-off forced upon him by ill health. He certainly has not lost his touch, landing a 100lb-plus, 29-bream haul from the cafe lake on his second visit. The catch, including a bream to 5lb, came from a swim below the cafe using quivertip tactics and a variety of baits.

With the first of this year's Wickford Angling Centre Northlands Park Evening Series matches taking place tonight, local matchmen have been targeting the Northlands Park lake's bream in practice sessions.

Norman Kenward took big catches on two successive trips. His first visit saw him land 25 big bream with individual specimens to 5lb. His next session produced 22 quality fish for another 70lb-plus haul.

Kenward's catches fell to luncheon meat and pellet baits fished on quivertip tactics, although pole and waggler anglers have also been taking big bags. To enter tonight's match meet at the Northlands Park car park at 5.15pm for a 5.45pm walk-off. Fishing time will be 6.15pm till 9.15pm. Match entry will cost £12 all in, with a 100 per cent pools payout at each match.

The second match in the series is on Wednesday, June 18, with further matches on June 25 and July 2.

Each angler's best three results will count towards the overall event, with Wickford Angling Centre providing the prizes.
