ATHLETICS: Benfleet’s ladies were once again on top form at the third round of the Essex Cross Country League at Hockley, Charlotte Peppiatt getting her first win of the series. She outsprinted rival Margaret Deasy in a final push to the finish to take the top spot. Charlotte’s talent was rewarded last month.
She secured her first Essex vest after her blistering performances over the summer and through the start of the cross-country season were spotted. Benfleet’s Catherine Stunt (13th), Jacqui Watson (15th) and Vanessa Dodds (19th) completed the Benfleet team which finished an impressive third. Benfleet’s men took eighth place with Mike Briggs in 35th, Jez Mancer 37th, Graham Booty 43rd, Tony Mead 63rd, Keiron McGill 70th and Chris Leeman 81st. This puts Benfleet’s ladies in joint second place behind Basildon AC and Benfleet's men in joint seventh after three rounds. Benfleet’s juniors also had a fine run with this round being the first in which they had four U13 girls.
Antonia Tidy Jones (20th), Jayne Harding (28th), Nimah O'Reardon-Mitchell (30th) and Chloe Ling (38th) gave the girls a sixth team placing.
There were no under-13 boys racing for Benfleet, although club member George Elliot came an outstanding second racing for Eastwood School. The under-15 girls saw lone Benfleet runner Georgina Warren finish 36th and, in the under-15 boys, the club had 28th finisher James Hall and 41st Alex Hatton.
