Fullerton becomes world champion

BASILDON-born Faye Fullerton achieved the greatest result in her athletics career when she won individual gold at the World University Cross Country Championships held in Mauquenchy, near Rouen in northern France.

Her win also led the British team to a comfortable gold ahead of Australia and Ireland.

Fullerton was in contention throughout with Irish pre-race favourite Fionnuala Britton, who the previous week had finished nine places above her in the World Cross Country Championships.

But this time the Irish runner had no answer as Fullerton went past her in the final 100 metres to claim gold by three seconds.

Bronze went to Morocco's Ikram Zoulali, who was over half a minute and 16 places ahead of Fullerton in the World Champs.

The two collected here made Fullerton's gold medal haul from the event to three as she won the team race with great Britain back in 2004.

She's a student at top sporting college St Mary's and competes for the Havering Mayes-brook club.
