Success for Basildon’s youngsters

BASILDON AC hosted its first fixture of the season, an Eastern Young Athletes match, on Sunday with resounding success.

The team romped to victory with consistent results across the age groups.

The under-13 girls won their age group with many athletes competing for the first time.

Kaylee Dodd won the 1500m A race and finished second in the B string 100 and 200.

J Swain won the B 800 and C Verehoef won the B shot.

The under-15s saw Jess Quick move up an age group with immediate success with a victory in the A string 200 and second places in the A 100 and B shot.

E Johnson won the 1500 B string and Annabelle Baker was second in the A string high and long jumps plus a second in the B 75 hurdles.

Several of the under-17 women returned to action after a busy Saturday. Gemma Vine secured solid points in the A 100, 200 and 300. In the latter she had a personal best.

Charlotte Bishop was victorious in the B 1500. K Radmore won the A shot and B discus. Injured sprinter Kelly Murphy won the hammer and scored in the javelin too.

Victories were hard to come by for the under-13 boys, who performed admirably.

Second places were achieved by Anthony Pegg in the A string 800, William Ballard in the A 1500, Max Bullman in the A string high jump and William Phillips the A shot.

The under-15 boys continued the heavy point-scoring with Akeem Akintokun breezing to victory in the A string 100 and 200.

M Etheridge won the 80 hurdles and vaulted well to win the A string pole vault.

Despite injury, Chris Stanton leapt to high jump A string success and Chris Swanborough also took the honours in the B string.

D Riches threw his way to wins in the B shot and A javelin.

In the under-17 men there was a throwing bonanza for Shaun McCarthy, who won the A shot, discus and hammer.

Callum Beine backed McCarthy up with a shot B string win.

Joe Peploe competed in his first ever 100 hurdles race after moving up an age group. The transition proved fruitful as he won convincingly in the A race.

This was a promising start to the season for Basildon's youngsters which the club hope they will build on as the season progresses.
