Spirit strong for Basildon

BASILDON AC hosted their first National Young Athletes League fixture of the year on Sunday.

Despite many absentees, partly due to the county championships being held on the following day, there were some notable performances and excellent team spirit.

The under-17 men saw most of their success on the field where Shaun McCarthy won the A string discus, Kieron Record the A javelin and Ryan Wennington the B latter event.

Joe Peploe continued his improvement over the 100 hurdles with another personal best and a solid second position in the A.

Not to be outdone the under-17 women also excelled in the throws where Nikki Twine achieved second places in both the A hammer and shot.

Twine was joined by Ellie Eaton in the B hammer and K Radmore in the B shot, who also came second. In the discus, Radmore placed second in the A string and Beth Dowdell threw her way to a B string victory.

The under-15 boys had wins from Ryan O'Sullivan in the 100 A where he also earned a personal best in a tight finish, and Chris Stanton in the A high jump.

M Etheridge achieved second places in the A pole vault and B long jump.

Further runner-up spots went to went to Daniel Riches in the A javelin, J Harrington in the 80 hurdles, and A Lucas in the A long jump.

Javelin proved a profitable event for the under-15 girls with double glory from J Hill and A Taylor.

Jess Quick sped to 200 B string glory and Claire Mayo put in a solid performance for second over the A 100.

Jade Peel jumped her way to second place over the 75 hurdles.

The under-13 girls and boys performed consistently with wins from N Judge in the B 600 and S Wennington the B long jump as well as a second in the B shot.

Emily Webb joined Wennington in the shot with a further second place.

J Swain ran solidly to second over the 1200. For the boys, Max Bullman jumped to second at the A high jump and H Hale sprinted to second in the 200.
