SOUTHEND High School for Girls head of PE Sue Simpson was delighted to see her intermediate girls’ athletes run off with the Club Kingswood-sponsored team of the year first prize.
She said: “2008 was a fabulous year for us and this rounds it off nicely.
“It was the first time we’d won the intermediate title at the English Schools’ Track and Field Cup after many years of trying and we’re very proud.
“And to have Georgia Atkins, who captained the team, runner-up in the junior sports personality was very good as well.”
Due to their success the South-church Boulevard school will now be heading for Estonia in June for their their first ever World Schools Athletic Championships appearance.
“We will have a team of six from years nine to 11 representing Great Britain and obviously we’re thrilled that our school has been chosen,” Simpson added.
But Southend High girls are not only capable of hitting the high spots on the team front. Although their teams won the Essex years seven and eight cross-countries already in 2009, Southend High School for Girls also enjoyed sporting glory individually through football, bowls, swimming, badminton and athletics.
Results: 1st Southend High School For Girls, 2nd Southend High School For Boys, 3rd Canvey Island FC, 4th Lakeside Hammers, 5th Hadleigh Under 16 Cricket Club.
