LOCAL lad Adam Barrett remained proud of his roots after seeing the strength of the winners at this year’s Echo sports awards.
The Southend United skipper, who grew up in the area, presented the main prize of the evening to Great Britain hockey star Jonty Clarke.
And Barrett was pleased to see the area’s athletes being rewarded for their dedication.
“Athletes work hard to achieve their success and they do a lot of things which we never get to hear about,” said the former Belfairs School pupil.
“They have to have great dedication and make a number of sacrifices too, so I think it’s only right we should celebrate their achievements.
“We should be proud of the sporting success we have around here and it’s great that someone like Jonty, who will have given his all to get to the Olympics, has won the award.
“It was an excellent night and I was glad to be able to be a part of it.”
