BLUES boss Steve Tilson was among the star guests on the night and he was chuffed to see the area's youngsters picking up prizes.
"In this day and age of computers, playstations and PSPs it's important we get the kids into sport to keep them fit and healthy," he said.
"Michael Kightly is a local lad and he's shown that people from south east Essex can go on and have a good career.
"It would be nice if the youngsters here could go on and succeed in their own sports and we need to keep the kids off the street and get more of them active."
Southend centre back and Echo columnist Adam Barrett was also present at the awards and he too was full of praise for the ceremony.
"It was a great evening, especially as it's the first time it's ever been done," he said.
"I really enjoyed it and it was brilliant to see Alf Bilby go up to win his award."
And Shrimpers midfielder Kevin Maher echoed those sentiments and was pleased to be at the Sky Bar.
"It was a good night," Maher said.
"People turned up in big numbers and I'm sure it's something that will be regularly held now."
Other guests from Southend United included youth team manager Ricky Duncan and sales manager Brian Wheeler.
