AFTER spending much of the year jet-setting round the world in search of golfing glory, Bill Longmuir admitted it was great to be back home.
Basildon was the starting place for a teenage Longmuir when he emarked on the main European Tour where he enjoyed outstanding success over three decades.
He never won a European tournament despite success in such far-flung places as New Zealand and Africa, but has changed all that since becoming qualified for the Seniors Tour at the age of 50.
"The Seniors Tour has been very good to me and I've achieved some memorable wins in my few years on it already," Longmuir said "I'm off to Barbados soon for the first tournament of the new campaign and obviously I'm hoping to get good results again."
He was at our awards night to present the special achievement prize to disabled shooter Adam Fontain and said: "I was delighted to be asked to be part of this first Echo sports awards night.
"It's a lovely occasion at an outstanding venue and obviously Basildon has a special place in my heart as it's where it all started for me.
"I'm sure all those who've collected awards tonight will treasure it as a special moment and with so many people here tonight the awards look certain to be a big night in the future.
"I was particularly pleased to present the award to Adam as his story is such an insipirational one of courage."
