GAVIN Tomlin and Britt Assombalonga continued their fine scoring form to fire Southend United up to fourth in the League Two table with a 3-1 win over Rochdale at Roots Hall on Saturday.

The duo were both on target to take their combined total to eight goals in their last three games.

And that delighted Assombalonga, who brought Blues back level after going behind at the start of the second half.

“Things are going really well at the moment and we certainly can't complain too much,” said the on loan Watford forward.

“As a team we've got 11 goals in three games and that's down to the whole team.

“Everyone is playing a part but I'm really pleased Gav is scoring regularly because he's been fantastic for me all season.

“He's always talking to me and helping me out when we're on the pitch and he's been very good all season.

“But now he's getting the goals as well as the good performances and it's great to see.”

Tomlin followed Assombalonga on to the score-sheet with a cool close range finish to make it five goals in three games.

And the striker was pleased to continue his impressing scoring streak.

“The ball just dropped to me in front of goal for a simple finish but that wouldn't have happened for me at the start of the season,” said Tomlin.

“It would've gone past me or gone to someone else but it's a different story now and I always thought that would happen.

“You have to stay positive so I thought the goals would come and it's working out really well with Britt and I at the moment.

“The most important thing with him is that he's willing to listen and learn and you don't tend to get many young players like that any more.”

Assombalonga has now hit the back of the net 12 times this season and his partnership with Tomlin was praised by a delighted Paul Sturrock at the end of the game.

“The front two were fantastic again,” said Sturrock.

"Gavin is in a rich vein of form," said the Scotsman.

"His general play all season has been fantastic, even when he wasn't scoring.

"But since he has started putting the ball in the back of the net you can see what a class player he is.

“Britt works so hard next to him as well and he just keeps churning the goals out which is fantastic for all concerned.”
