Southend United's Luke Prosser happy with draw against Accrington Stanley

Echo: Luke Prosser - happy with a draw against Accrington Stanley Luke Prosser - happy with a draw against Accrington Stanley

STAND IN skipper Luke Prosser insisted Southend United should be satisfied with their 1-1 draw at Accrington Stanley on Saturday.

A late equaliser from Kevan Hurst secured Blues a share of the spoils after Ryan Cresswell had earlier been sent off.

And Prosser felt that made it a reasonable result for Paul Sturrock’s side.

“People will think that because we’re nearer the top and Accrington are nearer the bottom that we should come here and steam-roller them but it doesn’t work like that in this league,” said Prosser, 24.

“We haven’t played well if we’re honest and we went a goal and a man down so to come back from that and get a point isn’t that bad a result.

“We’ve taken seven points from the last nine available which isn’t bad either but now we want to push on from here and pick up more good results in the very important games we have coming up.”

Prosser also looks set to play a part in those matches as Cresswell will be suspended for his side’s next three outings.

The centre-back was recalled to the starting line-up, after four games on the sidelines, to face Accrington Stanley after both Chris Barker and Mark Phillips failed late fitness tests.

And he was delighted to also be selected as skipper.

“It was a proud moment for me to be captain but once we get out there everyone is a captain really,” said Prosser.

“We all rallied together to get the goal and the point and I was pleased to be back playing again.

“I may have a few games coming up now due to the injuries and suspensions but it’s up to me to do well and try and stay in the side.

“The next three matches are massive, starting with Cheltenham Town on Tuesday, and we want to get a good result.”
