Southend United's Paul Smith: Our never say die attitude got us through

SOUTHEND United goalkeeper Paul Smith hailed his side’s never say die attitude after they reached the final of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

A last gasp goal from Ben Reeves gave Blues a 2-2 draw against Leyton Orient and a 3-2 aggregate win.

And Smith felt it was all down to Southend’s team spirit.

“There is a never say die attitude in this squad and it’s something I noticed on my very first day here,” said the shot-stopper.

“We had a few people playing with injuries but everyone dug in, worked hard and got the result we all wanted to get to Wembley.

“It’s a fantastic achievement too because Orient are a strong team.

“They have some real quality in their side and they showed that with the two very good finishes for their goals.

“But we were able to match and it will be some day now at Wembley.

“I’ve been lucky enough to be involved with games at the Millennium Stadium before but never Wembley and I’m really looking forward to it already.”
